Sunday Class Schedule - begins 9/14/25 Understanding the OCIC Process: A Guide for Parents Thank you for entrusting your child to our parish as they prepare for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist. This journey is not just about completing a requirement—it is a sacred opportunity to grow in faith, community, and relationship with Jesus Christ.
The 9:30 am Family Mass On Sundays when OCIC classes are held, children will be dismissed after the Opening Prayer (Collect) to go with their catechists for instruction. Parents should meet them on the Church Patio after Mass for Sunday Donuts and fellowship. We invite families to make this Mass a regular part of your spiritual life. Attending Mass each Sunday, not just on class days, strengthens your family’s connection to the Eucharist and the wider parish community, fostering continued growth in faith and unity.
A Two-Year Journey The Archdiocese of Los Angeles follows the Order of Christian Initiation for Children (OCIC), a two-year process modeled after the adult version (OCIA). This structure reflects the Church’s conviction that sacramental preparation is not merely about learning facts—it’s about forming disciples.
Year One focuses on the foundations of our Catholic faith: prayer, the life of Jesus, the Church, and how we are called to love and follow God.
Year Two focuses on direct preparation for the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist, while continuing to grow in prayer, liturgy, and Christian living.
Throughout this journey, children also participate in liturgical rites, parish events, and family-centered activities that deepen their connection to the life of the Church.
Who Participates in OCIC? The OCIC process is intended for:
Children age 7 and older who are not baptized.
Baptized Children who have not yet received First Reconciliation and/or Communion.
Children who are joining the Catholic Church from another Christian tradition.
Even if your child is older (for example, entering in 4th, 5th, or 6th grade), the two-year formation is still required. This ensures that every child is spiritually prepared and ready to receive the sacraments with understanding and reverence.
Children may begin OCIC in Grade 1, but only if they are at least 7 years old, the Church’s traditional “age of reason.” Younger children will participate in regular parish faith formation until they reach the appropriate age.
Next Steps Please complete the First Communion Registration Form (see link below) and return it to the Rectory with: (1) a copy of your child's baptismal certificate and (2) payment for the class (see links below).
